It is generally assumed that the play is one of Plautus’ later creations, perhaps written in the first decade of the second century. The large amount of song, so typical of the later plays, also supports this theory. Although there is no such creature as a typical Plautus play, this cannily chosen set of excerpts—ranging from the best- to least-known plays—gives a good sense of how a whole script runs, from opening hush, through brisk cameos and spectacular showstoppers, to final bow. For some time after his death, the scripts of Plautus’ plays existed in a highly fluid state in which they were no doubt altered by producers to meet the perceived demands of revival performances. Disputes as to which plays were genuinely Plautine seem to have arisen already in the second century bc , when editors first begin to work on Roman texts after the Alexandrian fashion. Plautus’s plays, almost the earliest literary works in Latin that have survived, are written in verse, as were the Greek originals. The metres he used included the iambic six foot line ( senarius) and the trochaic seven foot line ( septenarius ), which Menander had also employed.
